The Gilded Age Part 1 Mark Charles Dudley Warner 9781444464962 Books

What a disappointment. This little paperback contains hardly any of the book. The two volumes (1 and 2), go only through Chapter xviii, of what was published as a two-volume set, each volume with around thirty chapters.

The only reason I bought these was because my ancient Twain set, which I am reading, is missing Volume 2 of this novel. There should be something in the description that explicitly states that these books do not contain the entire novel between them. Totally useless.

My goal is to read everything that Twain wrote. I'm over halfway finished with his books, and so far this is the bottom of the barrel. This is the only book Twain ever wrote along with another author, and considering the quality, that's probably a good thing. It's very boring. There are too many characters and many plot threads, but none of them interesting. It's hard to believe this is by the same genius who wrote Puddin'head Wilson. I'm not sure why you have to "buy" this version in seven volumes, but they are free, so having download seven times was not a big deal.
Love anything about this time in history.
OK I found American colossus to be more what I was looking for. I wanted something that would give me a view of the history of the last half of the 19th century.
The pieces that are obviously written by Twain are brilliant, great stuff - the episode with Beriah Sellers, the stove, and the dinner of turnips and water are great. The stuff obviously written by Charles Warner is standard 19th century fare - Warner wasn't necessarily a pulp writer, but he also wasn't made of the stuff of Twain. Some of the book can be overly sentimental, and even rather bland. It's worth reading if you love Twain, but not the best thing to read if you're just starting to get into him.
Read this book on my way home from vacation. Shared many humorous parts with my husband who was driving. Loved the way you could hear the characters talk through the spelling of the words. Was highly stressed when si finished the book on my and could not download part 2. To me it's like a soap opera - lots of characters - fast moving - enough detail to make the reading flow but not too much to bog down the reader. Loved it!
