When your child cries because of the cruelty of your neighbor, does the command to love him still matter? If so, what does that love look like? The Neighbor is a true story of one family’s attempt to follow seemingly easy commands such as “Love your neighbor as yourself” and “Do good to those who hate you.” Through a series of increasingly difficult encounters, a new neighbor quickly becomes an enemy. Life is turned upside down as the family realizes that loving one’s enemy, while a feel-good thought, can be life-altering and deeply painful. So painful in fact, that it can bring you to question the goodness and love of God. Through this messy journey, we see the path we are called to walk as followers of Christ is not meant to be easy. It’s not meant to be comfortable. But it is the way to the very heart of God.

The Neighbor Allison Hilliard 9781541123519 Books Reviews
I started reading The Neighbor one week night after dinner, and before the evening’s activities, and I very nearly decided to skip going, I was so pulled in by the book. Hilliard had me from the first page. Her description of her situation and how it was such a time of trial for her and her family gave a feeling of sympathy, but when she went on to explain how she wasn’t telling her story out of a sense of righteousness or trying to give “holy advice”, Hilliard managed to delve into a higher level of understanding and empathy for the human spirit. I didn’t just want to read the book to see what would happen to “that poor family”, I had to keep reading to find out how Hilliard would persevere through such a long trial with her family and keep her relationship with God.
The Neighbor is full of Biblical scriptures that spoke to Hilliard throughout her time of trial that the book reveals, and intertwines with how the family continually chose the road less taken, the straight and narrow, and yes, sometimes contemplated their own way before coming back to their chosen path with God. The pages are filled with honest and true feelings and choices that were made by a woman who obviously doesn’t just choose to walk in her faith when things are easy. She is brave enough to wrestle with God when things get tough, and to work through them, even in her darkest moments.
I somehow tore myself from The Neighbor to go out that night, and finished the book the following evening. I found it a great book to read, re-read, and gather as much information and inspiration as possible from. A truly humbling and inspiring book of a difficult journey and relationship with God, Allison Hilliard’s The Neighbor is a must read for those with faith, as well as those searching for something to hold on to.
I had the privilege to read an advance copy of this book, and I must say it exceeded my expectations. It is more than a story chronicling the woes of a family and their difficulties with a neighbor, but it is an opportunity to really examine the crux of your faith and what it truly means to be a Christian. The author challenges us, strictly by using the word of God (not resorting to the beliefs of any one particular group's faith), to examine how God would want us to respond in every situation, regardless of how difficult or impossible it may seem. It was inspiring to follow someone's journey, and to see the transparency of how some Christians really do struggle during difficult situations, and question if God is there. This book is very real, down-to-earth, and convicting, but most of all, it perfectly illustrates God's unfailing love, as well as outlines what His true promises for His children are, as well as His expectations for us to love.
The Neighbor chronicles a couple's determination to show Christ's love to an adjacent resident that threatened the safety and sanity of their young family. Allison describes in detail the saga of her family's life next door to a chronically abusive, threatening and toxic neighbor. Your heart will be broken when you read the account of this one man's actions, his threats, his outrageous behavior and his infrequent, pitiful apologetic gestures. Allison's raw and unflinching narrative follow her response to these abuses and her determination to "put one foot in front of the other" and love.
The story is a difficult but important read. You will find yourself wondering time and time again "Why don't they just...." and finish the thought with some kind of awful revenge. But Allison and her husband are steadfast, determined and powered by the love and forgiveness of Christ.
Allison Hilliard speaks the difficult truth with an honest and humble voice. "Love of neighbor and love of God are inextricably woven together. You cannot love God without loving the neighbor." I promise you will be challenged and blessed by this book!
A courageous woman invites us into her painful reality as a near prisoner in her own home due to unpredictable cruelty of her neighbor. Though suffering incredible hardship, she honestly does battle with her own comfort and rights, teaching us how to put to death our own desires and take on Christ. As she incarnates Jesus to her neighbor, in the midst of his endless wrongdoing, we see what it actually looks like to love your enemy.
This is also a powerful example to us as believers of what it looks like to lament well. In prolonged distress, the author lays her questions and complaints before God, trains herself to remember what He has done, and encountering not only His works but His person, willingly humbles herself under His mighty hand to wait for His salvation. Even if you have never been targeted by an enemy, you will still benefit greatly by the reading of this powerful testimony, and will find a template for traversing your own sufferings honestly, but with great faith.
Ultimately, this is a gospel story - a story of Christ’s preeminence. He is a God who enters into the suffering of His children to hear their cries. He empowers them to endure abuse and to do good to those who persecute them. What’s more, He puts a holy disquiet in them - a longing for more than this world has to offer - a longing to be like Christ! You’ll be changed by The Neighbor, just as I was.
Not a neighborly experience. *~(
